Because the nose is exposed to the sun more than any other part of the body (except the top of the head for bald people), it is particularly vulnerable to cancer. When you have fair skin you are even more likely to develop nose skin cancer, but those with dark skin are not immune to nose skin cancer.  The sun causes damage to the skin, which can result in precancerous lesions, such as actinic keratosis.   This can be raised, crusty or scaly lesions that can if not treated can progress to cancerous lesions-usually a basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of nose skin cancer, and it is directly related to sun exposure. The lesions often begin as small translucent, or waxy-appearing, nodules that will ulcerate later from the center out and crust over. These types of carcinoma can vary in appearance from red to pink to black, brown, or gray. Basal cell carcinomas rarely metastasize to other parts of your body, but they do tend to recur in the same place and can erode the tissue and nose cartilage.  This can result in the loss of your nose.  So this type of nose skin cancer obviously can cause a considerable deformity and should not be taken lightly.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common form of nose skin cancer, and it is more malignant than basal cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is also related to overexposure to the sun and the resulting damage it does to your skin. The appearance of Squamous cell lesions can vary from crusted to wart-like and even open and ulcerated. Most Squamous cell lesions for nose skin cancer remain localized, but about 3 percent metastasize.  So, complete removal of these nose skin cancer lesions is important. Nose skin cancer from squamous cell carcinoma is most common in fair-skinned males, but the number of women exhibiting this type of nose skin cancer has increased quite a bit in the past few decades.

Malignant melanoma is one of the most dangerous forms of nose skin cancer, and it is directly related to the presence of moles and overexposure to the sun. Melanomas can pop-up anywhere on your body, but the face and nose is more common in males than females. Melanoma comes from melanocytes or pigment containing cells.  It appears as misshapen or irregular moles more than 0.5cm in diameter. Early diagnosis of this form of nose skin cancer is critical because lesions with a depth of more than 1.5mm have a high risk of metastasis and death. Previous skin cancer of any type increases the risk of developing melanoma.

There are a variety of treatment options for nose skin cancer included topical procedures like freezing, chemotherapy, surgery, and even radiation.  Depending on the type of nose skin cancer and the stage of it development, your healthcare provider will determine which type of therapy is best.  These best treatment for nose skin cancer is prevention.  You should avoid overexposure to the sun, use sunscreen, or even cover-up as much of your body as possible when out in the sun.  Nose skin cancer is definitely preventable, but proper precautions must be taken to avoid it.

SCUBAnauts International, a St. Petersburg, Florida non-profit corporation, along with the Alaska Mountaineering School, the Alaska Air National Guard 212th Rescue Squadron and the Denali National Park and Preserve are facilitating the summit expedition.  The team includes lower limb amputees and a recipient of a double lung transplant. They are testing the mechanical and non-mechanical qualities of their prostheses to assist clinical providers further improve performance and functionality. This is the first ever attempt by a double lung transplant recipient to summit at this altitude. They are also measuring heart rate, arterial oxygen saturation, lung spirometry values, severity of dyspnea (analogic score), and symptoms and signs of acute mountain sickness in the double lung Navy SEAL recipient compared to the other mountaineers at sea level and at different altitudes during the climb.

The nine-man team completed rigorous mountaineering training on the Pica Glacier in the Alaska Range last summer. Colby Coombs of the Alaska Mountaineering School (AMS) located in Talkeetna, Alaska and his group of highly skilled mountaineering instructors conducted the training, which included roped team movement on glaciers, winter camping, self-arrest, avalanche and crevasse rescue and other key skills necessary for successful high-altitude mountaineering. The expedition team not only learned how to overcome and adapt to the limitations caused by their injuries, but also to deal with normal obstacles like weather, altitude and challenging terrain.
